Project 2
Ways of Making - Architecture and the Body (Structure and Body)
Design Concept
Shroom Shack is a prototype bamboo structure specifically designed for the cultivation of oyster mushrooms. In designing this structure, numerous critical factors were taken into account to create an optimal growing environment for the mushrooms. Key considerations included controlling temperature and humidity levels, ensuring adequate cross ventilation, and providing shelter from direct sunlight. Through comprehensive research, it became clear that an enclosed structure was necessary to maintain the specific conditions required for the successful growth of oyster mushrooms.
The structure is constructed using hand-tied manila rope, which is employed to securely fasten the bamboo framework. This method not only ensures the strength and stability of the structure but also aligns with sustainable building practices. Additionally, black netting is incorporated into the design to serve multiple purposes: it facilitates water catchment, blocks excessive light, provides heat insulation, and supports indirect cooling. These features work together to create a controlled microclimate within the Shroom Shack, making it an ideal environment for mushroom cultivation. The use of natural materials and thoughtful design elements highlights the project's commitment to sustainable architecture and effective agricultural practices.

Self-Reflection
After completing this project, I realised that working with a large group of people presents significant challenges. Effective communication among team members is essential to prevent misunderstandings and errors. Without clear and consistent communication, the risk of mistakes increases, which can impact the project's progress and quality. Additionally, I learnt that time management skills are crucial, as poor time management can lead to delays and make it difficult to complete the project on schedule.
This experience provided us with valuable insights into constructing bamboo structures. It was an eye-opening opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to a real-world project, allowing us to understand the practical aspects and intricacies of building with this material. In my opinion, this project was one of the most memorable experiences of my first semester. The hands-on involvement in creating a physical structure was incredibly rewarding and offered a unique learning opportunity that will stay with me throughout my architectural studies.
