Project 1
Case Study – Passive Building Design:
Assessing Daylight & Thermal Comfort at Modern Houses
Design Process
I was assigned to form a group of eight to explore ways to improve daylighting and thermal comfort in a modern house, focusing on either a double-storey corner lot or a semi-detached house. The project required us to identify a specific space within the chosen house that faced issues related to daylighting and/or thermal comfort. To support our findings, we needed to document the identified problems with photographs and gather secondary data such as sun path charts, psychometric charts, and relevant climatic information.
As part of the project, we were also required to propose passive design strategies to enhance both daylighting and thermal comfort within the chosen space. Each group had to present at least one design solution for each issue and create before-and-after visuals to illustrate the impact of our interventions. These solutions were to be supported by a series of technical drawings, including a location plan, floor plans, two elevations and one section, all drawn to scale. Finally, all findings and design solutions had to be compiled and presented in two A2-size boards for submission.
After discussing with my teammates, we decided to focus on a double-storey semi-detached house located in Port Dickson. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the space and its environmental conditions, we conducted a site visit where we gathered essential data. Using a smartphone lux metre, we measured the lux levels at different times of the day to assess the quality of natural lighting. Additionally, we recorded temperature readings to evaluate thermal comfort within the space. Beyond data collection, we also took photographs and videos as visual references and documented key observations about the house’s design, orientation and existing ventilation and lighting conditions. These details provided us with a strong foundation for our analysis and design proposal.
Following the site visit, we divided the workload among our team members to ensure the successful completion of the A2-size boards. My primary responsibilities included producing the orthographic drawings and conducting background research relevant to our study. Once I had completed my assigned tasks, I worked on organising the information into a structured and visually appealing layout using Canva. I ensured that the content was presented clearly and cohesively, making it easier for viewers to understand our findings and proposed solutions. Through this process, I not only refined my technical drawing and research skills but also enhanced my ability to communicate design ideas effectively through visual presentation.

Self-Reflection
Throughout Project 1, I have gained valuable knowledge in identifying issues related to daylighting and thermal comfort in double-storey terraced and semi-detached houses. By analysing different spaces, I have learnt to evaluate how natural light is distributed and how various environmental factors impact thermal comfort. This process has deepened my understanding of the crucial role these elements play in architectural design.
Moreover, I have developed the ability to propose effective solutions by incorporating passive design strategies. This includes exploring interventions that maximise natural light, enhance ventilation and regulate indoor temperatures without relying on mechanical systems. Through this project, I have strengthened my understanding of sustainable design principles and their significance in creating energy-efficient and comfortable living environments.
The combination of face-to-face learning and digital tools such as MyTimes and Microsoft Teams greatly enhanced my ability to grasp complex concepts and complete the project efficiently. This hybrid learning approach allowed me to benefit from both in-person discussions and online resources, creating a more flexible and engaging educational experience. Collaborating with my group of friends further enriched the process, making it both enjoyable and interactive.
I am also sincerely grateful for the guidance and support provided by Mr. Choong Wei Li throughout the project. His insightful feedback and constructive advice were instrumental in helping us overcome challenges and stay on track. His encouragement gave us the confidence to approach the project with enthusiasm and determination, ultimately contributing to our successful completion of the task.
