Project 2
Artificial Lighting Design Layout: Lumen Method
Design Process
I was assigned to form a group of eight and select an indoor space from a list of options, including a hospital, library, office, restaurant, museum, showroom or another approved space. The goal of this project was to analyse the lighting conditions of the chosen space, identify issues related to both daylighting and artificial lighting and propose suitable design improvements.
To begin, we were required to provide a brief background of the selected building and document any existing lighting challenges. Our analysis involved assessing how natural and artificial lighting affected the functionality and ambiance of the space. Additionally, we needed to create an overall floor layout and a detailed blow-up floor plan to illustrate the spatial arrangement.
The project also included technical calculations and design proposals. We need to conduct Lumen Method calculations to determine appropriate lighting levels and developed a reflected ceiling plan with a proposed general lighting layout. Furthermore, a cross-section was required to showcase light distribution and the types of lighting fixtures used in the space. To enhance the lighting experience, we are required to propose suitable light fittings and created two additional sketches of alternative artificial lighting designs that could improve both visual comfort and aesthetic appeal. Finally, all findings and design proposals were compiled into two A2-sized boards for final submission and presentation.
For this project, my teammates and I selected the reading room at Sunway Geolake Residences as our case study. To thoroughly understand the existing lighting conditions, we conducted a site visit, which allowed us to collect primary data and assess the lighting issues firsthand. During our visit, we carefully observed the space, measured lighting levels and documented potential areas of improvement. We also took numerous photos and videos as visual references and recorded key details for further research and analysis.
After completing the site visit, we divided the tasks required to develop the final A2 presentation boards. My specific responsibility was to produce the orthographic drawings and conduct basic research related to lighting design solutions. Once I had completed my portion, I organised the information in a structured and visually appealing format using Canva. This ensured that the findings were clearly presented and ready for integration into the final poster.

Self-Reflection
Throughout Project 2, I have gained valuable insights into designing effective and well-suited layouts for artificial lighting, particularly for general illumination. This project has allowed me to explore how different lighting arrangements impact both the functionality and ambiance of an indoor space.
Furthermore, I have learnt to make informed choices when selecting lighting fixtures for general lighting, taking into account factors such as efficiency, aesthetics and suitability for different environments. In addition to general lighting, I have also developed an understanding of how complementary lighting types can enhance overall illumination and elevate the spatial experience.
The combination of face-to-face learning and digital tools like MyTimes and Microsoft Teams has significantly improved my ability to grasp complex concepts and complete the project efficiently. This hybrid learning approach enabled me to take advantage of both in-person discussions and online resources, creating a more dynamic and engaging learning experience. Working closely with my group of friends further enriched the process, making it both collaborative and enjoyable.
I am deeply grateful for the guidance and support provided by Mr. Choong Wei Li throughout the project. His constructive feedback and valuable advice were instrumental in helping us navigate challenges and stay on track. His encouragement instilled confidence in us, allowing us to approach the project with enthusiasm and determination, ultimately leading to its successful completion.
