Project 1

Tribute to a Starchitect

Design Process

I was tasked with selecting my favorite 'starchitect,' whether a local or international figure, and conducting background research to gain insights into their style, personality, and overall approach to architecture. After gathering this information, I was to create a final poster on A3-size paper. The poster should be coloured using a suitable colour palette and appropriate coloring media to effectively capture and convey the essence and identity of the chosen architect.

I selected Tadao Ando as my starchitect because of his unique approach to architecture, particularly exemplified in two of his most renowned works: the Church of the Light and the Poly Grand Theatre. These buildings showcase his mastery of light, space, and minimalist design, which deeply resonate with my own architectural interests and aspirations.

Final Work

To create a visually compelling and harmonious composition, I employed the golden triangle technique in my poster. This method allowed me to arrange the elements in a balanced and aesthetically pleasing way. In addition to the Church of the Light and the Poly Grand Theatre, I also included another of Ando's iconic projects, the Hill of the Buddha. By incorporating this third building, I aimed to further express the depth and diversity of Ando's architectural vision while capturing the spiritual and contemplative qualities that are characteristic of his work.

Self-Reflection

Throughout Project 1, I have delved deeply into the design philosophy of Tadao Ando, exploring his distinctive style, his famous quotes, and some of his most iconic buildings. This exploration has given me a comprehensive understanding of his approach to architecture, which emphasizes simplicity, the interplay of light and shadow, and a profound connection with nature.

To further enhance my learning, I referred to the exceptional works of my seniors, which I found on MyTimes and Facebook. These resources provided me with valuable insights and inspiration, enabling me to successfully complete the project on my own. The guidance and examples I found there were instrumental in helping me apply the concepts I learned about Ando's work to my own project.

I would also like to express my deep appreciation to Mr. Adib, my tutor, whose continuous support and advice were crucial throughout this journey. His thoughtful guidance not only helped me navigate the challenges I encountered but also encouraged me to push my creative boundaries. His mentorship has been invaluable in helping me grow as a student.
