Project 1
Material Experience in Architecture:
Structural & Architectural Building Material Applications (Grouping)
Design Process
I was tasked with forming a group of six to carry out a detailed case study on a notable building situated in Kuala Lumpur or Selangor. Our goal was to examine five architectural building materials and two structural materials used in the selected building. As part of the study, we planned to focus on one material that significantly enhances the user experience through its application. Additionally, we were required to provide a detailed illustration of the installation process for the chosen material. The project would culminate in a presentation on a single A1-sized board.
My teammates and I decided to select a building named the Planter Box House, a unique residential property located in Bangsar. Since it is a private residence, we arranged an appointment with the owner to conduct a site visit. During the visit, we had the opportunity to interview the owner about his house, including insights into the architect’s design concept and the overall approach behind the building’s construction. My role in this process was to carefully note down all the information shared during the interview and to document the visit by taking photos and videos of the house for reference.
After the site visit, we divided the tasks required for the completion of the A1 poster. My specific responsibility was to conduct research on the structural materials used in the building. This involved conducting in-depth online research and studying various resources to gather accurate and relevant information about the materials. Once I had compiled all the necessary details, I organised them in a clear and visually appealing format using Canva, ensuring that the information was ready for inclusion in the final poster.

Self-Reflection
Throughout Project 1, I gained a wealth of knowledge about various materials, including their applications, properties, disadvantages and advantages. I also developed a deeper understanding of the construction processes associated with these materials. Through extensive online research and collaborative study sessions with my teammates, I was able to dive deeper into the technical aspects of these materials and their role in building construction. This hands-on research experience not only enriched my understanding but also enhanced my ability to analyse and evaluate materials in a more comprehensive manner.
Additionally, Project 1 provided me with the unique opportunity to visit a private residential house, something I had never experienced before. Conducting a site visit to the Planter Box House was an invaluable learning experience that allowed me to observe architectural details and material applications in a real-world context. It was a significant and rewarding experience that broadened my perspective as an architecture student and gave me a glimpse into the practical side of architectural studies.
The combination of face-to-face learning and the integration of digital resources such as MyTimes and Microsoft Teams significantly enhanced my ability to grasp complex concepts and complete the project efficiently. The hybrid approach allowed me to make the most of both physical interactions and online tools, creating a more dynamic and flexible learning environment. Working with my group of friends further enriched the experience, making the learning process more engaging and collaborative.
I would also like to express my gratitude and appreciation for Mr. Siva's tutorial guidance throughout the project. His valuable advice and constructive feedback were instrumental in helping us tackle various challenges and stay on track. His unwavering support gave us the confidence we needed to approach the project with enthusiasm and determination, ultimately contributing to our success in completing it.
